Understanding astrophysical black holes through direct imaging on scales of a few gravitational radii is the primal goal of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). It can only be achieved by a world-wide network of mm-VLBI antennas, of which the most sensitive component is phased ALMA. The two main EHT targets based on their predicted shadow size, are the supermassive black holes M87* and Sgr A*. In addition to the measurement of the shadow size and shape, also the variability and polarisation properties of the plasma surrounding the black hole are observed which can constrain the properties of the super massive black hole. For M87* and Sgr A* EHT simultaneous multi-wavelength campaigns are conducted to better constrain the black hole physics.

21. Fondi a Sostegno Iniziativa

INAF-IRA received some funding from the BlackHoleCam ERC from 2018 to 2021, with the main goal to work on the development and testing of the rPICARD CASA pipeline to reduce EHT (and also more generic VLBI) data. At this moment, there are still ca. 48 kEuro from this concluded project available in our F.O. (1.05.02.39).
