This long term research program focuses on the origin of Cosmic Rays and the impact of these particles on the interstellar and intergalactic medium. In the last 20 years discoveries in X-rays and gamma-rays have paralleled the importance of results from direct CR measurements. The next decade promises even more exciting news, with ASTRI and CTA observing the sky at the highest energies with unprecedented quality. This program is aimed at advancing theory so as to put the existing data in a coherent framework and prepare the tools for full exploitation of upcoming capabilities. The synergy between theory and observations will allow INAF to be a major player in unveiling outstanding mysteries in CR physics, such as the nature of PeVatrons and the main sources of leptonic anti-matter.

INAF fully holds the leadership of this multifaceted program. The expertise in computational astrophysics lies fully within INAF (in collaboration with two INAF associates, L. Del Zanna and A. Mignone). The interface with observations and upcoming facilities is managed by INAF team members actively involved in the Science Working Groups (SWGs) of CTA and ASTRI, and INAF associate R. Zanin, CTA project scientist.

The team members have leading roles in the field also at the international level: G, Morlino and B. Olmi are the coordinators of the CTA SWGs on CRs and Galactic science respectively; E. Amato was coordinator of the CTA CR SWG (2018-2020) and has been a stable member since 2017 (chair in 2021) of the CRD (galactic CRs) International Scientific Panel Committee of the ICRC.
