In questo progetto altamente interdisciplinare combiniamo, modellizziamo e interpretiamo dati della massima qualità raccolti dalle missioni spaziali della NASA e dell'ESA e da terra, per misurare le proprietà (masse, raggi, orbite, evoluzione dinamica) di sistemi planetari simili al nostro e per definire i requisiti per future missioni spaziali finalizzate alla loro ulteriore caratterizzazione. Con TASSEL abbiamo realizzato per la prima volta una collaborazione scientifica a livello nazionale tra grandi esperti in osservazioni e modellistica di esopianeti e del Sistema Solare, e informatica applicata all'astrofisica per produrre un decisivo passo in avanti verso l'identificazione e la determinazione della frequenza di veri analoghi del Sistema Solare.
In this highly interdisciplinary project we combine, model, and interpret data of the highest quality gathered from NASA and ESA space missions and from the ground, to measure the properties (masses, radii, orbits, dynamics) of planetary systems resembling our own and to define requirements for future space endeavors aimed at their further characterization. TASSEL has assembled for the first time an Italy-wide scientific collaboration among major experts in observations and modeling of exoplanets and Solar System, and information technology for astrophysics to provide a decisive step forward towards the identification and frequency determination of true Solar System analogs.

The identification and (orbital, structural, atmospheric) characterization of exoplanets are leading activities for INAF, with strong involvement and leadership roles of our team members in strategic programs for the advancement of knowledge in the field conducted with top-level instrumentation both in space (Gaia, CHEOPS, PLATO, Ariel) and on the ground (HARPS-N/TNG, GIARPS/TNG, ESPRESSO/VLT, HIRES/ELT, SPHERE/VLT, SHARK/LBT). Despite the extraordinary potential to propel interdisciplinary work lines and partnerships within the Institute, joint efforts between INAF researchers working in the fields of exoplanets and the Solar System are still lacking. Our INAF-wide collaboration will exploit the synergy potential between the two fields in order to successfully tackle the questions in exoplanet science at the core of our project, enabling INAF’s leading role in the future identification and physical characterization of true Solar System analogs with e.g. PLATO, JWST, WFIRST, Ariel.
