Nel prossimo decennio l'Osservatorio Rubin (VRO-LSST) otterra' astrometria e sequenze temporali multibanda di sorgenti nell'emisfero sud fino a 5 magnitudini più deboli del limite di Gaia (G~20.7 mag). Scopo di GaLS e' estendere lo studio delle stelle pulsanti come candele standard e traccianti di popolazione stellare e la ricostruzione delle storia di formazione stellare ai limiti di magnitudine delle osservazioni con VRO-LSST. Inoltre, sfruttando i grandi cataloghi di variabili, gli strumenti e le pipeline che abbiamo sviluppato come responsabili del processing di RR Lyrae e Cefeidi osservate da Gaia, con GaLS contribuiremo a sviluppare un'architettura e strumenti specifici per l'identificazione, classificazione e validazione delle sorgenti variabili osservate da VRO-LSST.
Over the next decade the Rubin Observatory (VRO-LSST) will collect astrometry and timeseries multiband photometry of south hemisphere sources up to 5 magnitudes fainter than reached by Gaia (G~20.7 mag). The main aim of the GaLS project is to expand Gaia's horizon for pulsating stars as standard candles and stellar population tracers and our expertise in star formation recovery into the VRO-LSST magnitude/space volumes. By exploiting large catalogues of variable sources, tools and pipelines that we have developed as team charged with the specific processing of RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids observed by Gaia, with GaLS we will also contribute an architecture and specific tools for the identification, classification and validation of variable sources observed by VRO-LSST.

The INAF senior researchers in our team have a consolidated and worldwide acknowledged expertise in the study of pulsating variable stars in different evolutionary phases. The INAF-associated member has a worldwide acknowledged expertise in star formation recovery. Our team includes members of Coordination Unit 7 (CU7; Variability Analysis) and Coordination Unit 9 (Archive and Catalogue Access) of the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC). The project PI is manager of the DPAC, CU7 work package devoted to the validation and full characterisation of Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars observed by Gaia. She is member of the Rubin Transients and Variable Stars (TVS) and SMWLV LSST Science Collaborations and is the PI of the Rubin-LSST in-kind contribution: S15 - TITLE: Tools for classification, full characterisation and validation of variable sources, endorsed by the TVS Science Collaboration. The Project Co-PI and two other researchers of our team are also members of the Rubin TVS SC and the Gaia DPAC.

A financial support of 5k€ has been obtained so far by INAF (F. Ob. 1.05.03.06, Partecipazione LSST - Large Synoptic Survey Telescope - ref. Adriano Fontana) to support the participation of the team members to LSST meetings in Italy over the years 2018-2020, about 2k€ of which were spent until 2020. Financial support of about 81k€ is expected to allow attendance to LSST meetings and workshops (9k€), for hardware (2k€) and to hire a senior postdoc for two years starting her/his activities at the beginning of 2024, to carry out in-kind activities associated with the GaLS project. The new hire will require about 35k€/year (totalling 70k€ over the two years).
