LEWIS is a large program, approved in the ESO period 108, to obtain the first homogeneous integral-field spectroscopic survey of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Hydra I cluster of galaxies with MUSE@ESO-VLT. The new sample of 32 UDG candidates have been recently discovered inside 0.6 virial radius of the cluster. UDGs are empirically defined to be faint (μ0,g ≥ 24 mag/arcsec^2) and diffuse (Re ≥ 1.5 kpc) objects, with stellar masses similar to dwarf galaxies. For all UDGs in Hydra I, the MUSE data will confirm the cluster membership, measure their stellar kinematics and stellar populations. The stellar population properties and the baryonic versus dark matter fraction will be compared with hydrodynamical models of UDGs to probe their formation channels.

The LEWIS large program is led by an INAF staff astronomer, E. Iodice, from the Astronomical Observatory of Capodimonte (Naples). As reported in Tab.1, the 32% of the team (8 out of 25 members) are INAF staff astronomers from three INAF institutes (Naples, Teramo and Padova). Taking into account the INAF associates in the team, which are six in total, the INAF contribution to the project is 56%.

All the three WPs are led by INAF staff astronomers in the team, which are the main experts in the field of stellar kinematics, stellar populations and GCs science. In addition, one of the INAF associate, Dr. G. D’Ago, has developed an ad-hoc Python-based pipeline to perform a full-spectral fitting and derive the line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion. This pipeline, named MagicGui (D’Ago et al. in prep.) is going to be used for the LEWIS data analysis.
