The ‘baryon cycle’, i.e., the collapse of gas to form stars, and the subsequent feedback of energy and momentum into the interstellar medium, is an intrinsically multi-scale and multi-phase process. Nearby star-forming galaxies offer, therefore, a unique view-point at the interface of the cosmological and Galactic scales. The PHANGS program aims at obtaining, for the first time, a comprensive view of the star formation cycle by observing nearby galaxies at cloud-scale resolution (better than 100 pc) across the electromagnetic spectrum exploiting a series of large programs on the current set of “great observatories”: ALMA, VLT, HST and JWST.

My responsibilities within the team include the co-lead (together with Eric Emsellem) of the MUSE data working group, and the lead of the proposal preparation activities for ESO. As co-lead of the MUSE data working group, I have developed the data analysis software which has been used to extract physical parameters (emission lines fluxes, stellar population properties etc) from the PHANGS data. All the data for the PHANGS-MUSE large program has been successfully processed and released to the community in summer 2021, as described in Emsellem et al. 2021.

As coordinator of all PHANGS proposals for ESO, I am responsible for pushing proposal ideas from the brainstorming to the fully fledged proposal stage, for offering technical expertise during proposal preparation (e.g. integration time calculation etc), and supporting junior members of the team in developing their leadership skills as proposal PIs. MUSE is one of the most oversubscribed instruments in the world (oversubscription rate of ~10). As coordinator of the PHANGS proposal effort, my team has obtained a total of 82.3 hours with MUSE in the last year.

The funding for the program is responsibility of individual members, so it is impossible to estimate the total amount of funds dedicated to the program from all around the world, but it is likely of the order of >10 MEur. This envelope includes one ERC advanced Grant (Schinnerer), an ERC consolidator grant (Bigiel), an ERC starting grant (Kruijssen), two Emily Noether Grants (Kreckel, Chevance), extensive funding from NASA for the HST and JWST programs (Lee). No INAF funding is avaiable.
