Goal of IDEA is to enhance the performance of the detection technology proposed and/or adopted in several high energy space missions which are based on the use of SDD. The XGIS instrument as proposed for THESEUS and the Hermes payloads are taken as a reference. IDEA will focus on developing a technology to bond the preamplifier chip directly on the SDD, fully replacing the wire-bonding connections with the bump-bonding technique, thus avoiding the use of a PCB as an intermediate layer. Differently from the actual technique the ASIC chip will be placed upside down and located with its input pad above the SDD anode. The advantages of the process will consist in decreasing the detector noise, reducing the inactive area of the detector, and simplifying the engineering process.

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) represent transient events par excellence. INAF and particularly OAS, IAPS and IASF have a long heritage on both data interpretation and theoretical explanation of such events. In recent years the interest of the community has been even more strongly triggered by the discovery of the gravitational waves, related to the short GRBs. Dedicated instruments must have high sensitivity which in turns means a high effective area. Future missions require a large pass-band and high throughput from a fraction of keV to a few tens of MeV. INAF has also a long history in the proposal, design, and realization of x-ray and gamma-ray experiments. In recent years, SDDs have been proposed both for direct detection of x-ray photons and for indirect detection of gamma-rays thanks to the SDD + scintillator crystal system (siswich configuration).

21. Fondi a Sostegno Iniziativa

This Scheda is supporting the request of Large Grant INAF named IDEA: Integrated Detector-Electronics system for hard X-/gamma-ray Astronomy, "An innovative design for a large effective area, broad energy range, very low noise detection system for X-/gamma-ray astrophysics through a full integration of Silicon sensors and read-out electronics". For its generality, this activity has been connected with three "Schede-Madre: 1)THESEUS-XGIS ; 2) eXTP; 3) HERMES. The three experiments have a strong link concerning the detection principle and this proposal would provide a strong improvement of their performances. Even if, independently, the three missions have been partially or fully financed, the IDEA project is completely independent and not supported by the above mentioned Mother-projects.
