The Solar Exploration
by Lunar Eclipsing with Nanosatellites Experiment–SELENE– is a Space Weather
(SWx) mission with Moon orbiting observatories utilizing lunar limb occultation
of the solar disk for detection and propagation prediction of Earth-directed coronal
mass ejections (CMEs). At the same time, SELENE will monitor the heliospheric
particle radiation (electron, ions) and magnetic field environment of the
Earth-Moon system.

The Turin solar physics group had a key role in the development and operations of the UVCS instrument, observing the corona on-board the SOHO spacecraft (launched in 1995). The team is presently coordinating the Metis coronagraph for the ES A-Solar Orbiter mission. Metis is developed in collaboration with the Italian space solar physics community.

The group is also involved in the ASPIICS coronagraph for the PROBA-3 ESA mission. The solar team in INAF-OATo has developed the coronagraph Sounding-rocket Coronagraphic Experiment (SCORE) which, aboard the NASA sub-orbital mission HERSCHEL, has acquired the first measurement of the helium abundance of the solar corona.

INAF-OATo has developed the Optical Payload Systems (OPSys) facility hosted in ALTEC. Metis and ASPIICS have been calibrated in the OPSys facility.

INAF-OATo contributes to the ESA Space Weather Service Network (SWESNET) by developing software tools for the CME propagations prediction form coronagraphic images and the geomagnetic effectiveness from in-situ data.
