Le stelle di piccola massa (nane M) costituiscono la più grande componente stellare nel intorno solare. La caratterizzazione precisa di queste stelle è cruciale per qualsiasi studio che si occupi delle proprietà locali della Galassia. Allo stesso tempo, le stelle M sono obiettivi promettenti nella ricerca di piccoli pianeti con le potenziali capacità di ospitare la vita. Tuttavia, le proprietà stellari delle nane M sono difficile di stimare. Le nane M sono deboli alle lunghezze d'onda ottiche e il loro spettro è coperto da una foresta di linee molecolari che mescolano o nascondono la maggior parte delle linee spettrali utilizzate nell'analisi delle stelle di tipo solare. Questa proposta mira a una caratterizzazione dettagliata delle stelle M (e dei loro pianeti) nel intorno solare.
Low-mass stars or M dwarfs constitute the largest stellar component in the solar neighbourhood. The precise characterization of these stars is crucial for any study dealing with the local properties of the Galaxy. At the same time, M dwarfs have been recognized as promising targets in the search for small planets with the potential capabilities of hosting life. However, unlike their solar-type counterparts, the stellar properties of M dwarfs are poorly constrained. M dwarfs are faint at optical wavelengths and their spectra is covered by a forest of molecular lines that blend or hide most of the spectral lines used in the analysis of solar-type stars.
This proposal aims to a characterization of the low-mass (both in the stellar and substellar domain) component of the solar neighbourhood.

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: var(--bs-font-sans-serif); font-size: 1rem;">We plan to make an extensive use of data in public archives. Some examples include high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra at optical wavelengths (e.g. HARPS, HARP-N, R ~115000, spectral coverage 390-690 nm through the ESO and TNG archives) and near infrared (e.g. GIANO-B spectra, R ~50000, wavelength coverage 950 - 2.450 nm), medium resolution UV to near infrared spectra (e.g. X-Shooter spectra through the ESO archive, R ~ 5000-8000, wavelength coverage 300 – 2480 nm). We will use both space based (e.g. TESS) and ground based photometry (e.g. MEarth, SuperWASP, EXORAP, APACHE). Ancillary data such as X-ray levels or UV emission obtained by special missions such as X-MMM, Rosat, Chandra, Galex, or EUV will be collected from the HEASARC database. Near and far infrared fluxes will be collected by exploring the available data in the IRAS, ISO, Spitzer, WISE, and HERSCHEL archives. We note that our team has already a big experience in the analysis of such type of data. In addition, we plan to submit observing proposals where needed.</span></div>

This proposal were submitted to the PRIN MIUR 2020 call (but with a different name "Know your little neighbours"), but no founds were granted. It was submitted again for the PRIN MUR 2022 call. The total budget corresponds to 397 kEuro, from which 249 kEuro corresponds to the MUR co-founding. It was re-edited as an ERC-Consolidator proposal and submitted to the 2023 call. The total budget corresponds to 1867 kEur.
