A systematic analysis of early stages of massive star formation requires a large statistics, which is offered by Herschel observations of the Milky Way. This represented the main goal of the Hi-GAL survey and of the VIALACTEA project (both with INAF-IAPS P.I.) and is still producing results, far beyond the initial objectives. We continue to pursue the ambitious goal of combining the new-generation surveys of the Galactic plane from near-IR to the radio, both in continuum and spectral lines, to obtain the ingredients for a “star formation recipe”. Many important results have been published, but further work is required to deliver large mosaics and multi-wavelength compact source catalogs, and to characterise structures in interstellar clouds by means of advanced morphological tools.

The Hi-GAL survey has an INAF P.I.-ship (S. Molinari, INAF-IAPS, Rome). INAF-IAPS lead the effort to build a dedicated reduction pipeline and a final map making engine in synergy with the universities of Rome “La Sapienza” and “Tor Vergata”, producing the algorithms ROMAGAL (Traficante et al. 2011, MNRAS, 416, 2932) and, as a further development, UNIMAP (Piazzo et al. 2015, MNRAS 447, 1471). At present, the team illustrated here and composed by researchers from INAF structures IAPS, OAA, and from INAF section at University of Salento, still leads the main studies based on the Hi-GAL data and delivers the most relevant results, as shown in the "science data product" section of this report.<br>Moreover, our team plays a leading role, at an international level, in the mono- and multifractal analysis of the of interstellar medium maps. In particular, the original multifractal analysis we published on MNRAS in 2018 gave rise to the similar works of other international groups (collaborators or even competitors of ours).
