This program aims to address two of the longstanding issues of astrophysics: 1) to establish firm links among the physical and chemical properties of core-collapse supernova remnants (SNRs), the processes associated with the parent supernovae (SNe), and the nature of their progenitor stars; 2) to shed light on the contribution of massive stars, SNe, and SNRs to the origin of cosmic rays (CRs) in our Galaxy. The program adopts a multidisciplinary approach and the synergic collaboration among groups studying different aspects of stellar-SN-SNR evolution and CR acceleration. We use state-of-the-art stellar evolution models and 3D SN and SNR models (including CR acceleration) and analyze multi-band data of progenitors, SNe, and SNRs to describe the path from massive stars to SNe and SNRs.

21. Fondi a Sostegno Iniziativa

To date, we have received funding for a total of ~173 k€, through the following projects: i) “Filling the gap between supernova explosions and their remnants through magnetohydrodynamic modelling and high performance computing” (2015-2017; PI S. Orlando) funded by INAF in the framework of PRIN-INAF 2014; ii) “Connecting supernova remnants to their progenitor supernovae by combining three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations and analysis of high energy observations” (2018; PI S. Orlando) funded by ASI (ASI-INAF n. 2017-14-H.0); iii) "Probing particle acceleration and gamma ray propagation with CTA and its precursors" (2018; PI F. Tavecchio) funded by INAF; iv) "Particle Acceleration in Galactic Sources in the CTA era" (2019-2020; PI E. Amato) funded by INAF; v) “From massive stars to supernovae and supernova remnants: driving mass, energy and cosmic rays in our Galaxy” (2021-2022; PI S. Orlando) funded by INAF in the framework of PRIN-INAF 2019. In answer to the call PRIN MUR 2022, we are applying for funding with a project proposal entitled "Life, death and after-death of massive stars: reconstructing the path from the pre-supernova evolution to the supernova remnant" (PI S. Orlando); the requested funding is ~ 245 k€. We are also applying for an INAF Theory Grant (title "Supernova remnants as probes for the structure and mass-loss history of the progenitor systems"; PI S. Orlando) to investigate how SNRs are influenced by the CSM resulting from the mass-loss history of the progenitor systems; the requested funding is 50 k€.
