This program describes a long-term study of star-formation regions (SFRs) and young clusters, based on observations of their bulk low-mass stellar populations, using a wide variety of instruments and wavebands. Topics include: X-ray observations of young clusters; The IMF, and its dependency on environment; Census of SFRs via optical/NIR photometry; Circumstellar disks and optical emission lines as tracers of young stars; The determination of young-star ages; Spatial substructures and Star-formation history in SFRs: simultaneous vs. triggered formation; Environmental effects on disk evolution; Stellar dynamics (radial velocities, proper motions): multiple kinematic populations in SFRs, cluster evaporation, diffuse populations; Techniques for spectroscopic Stellar parameter determination.

INAF-OAPA did contribute to the development of focal-plane filters for the Chandra and XMM-Newton/EPIC X-ray Observatory. As a result, we obtained Chandra and XMM-Newton Guaranteed time, which was mostly devoted to study young clusters. Also, a number of GO Programs were successfully made with both Chandra and XMM-Newton to further pursue these X-ray studies. The Gaia-ESO Survey (with INAF-OAA co-PI S.Randich, see Gaia-ESO "scheda" 2021) did see a massive involvement of INAF researchers who focused their research to the science objectives of this program, as well as to many other aspects required to achieve the science goals. Several members of this program also worked as co-leads of Working Groups within the Gaia-ESO Survey. G.Sacco is the PI of the upcoming 4MOST-4SYS ESO Public Survey to study young stars in the solar neighborhood (see 4SYS "scheda"). S. Sciortino is co-chair of the "Star Formation and Evolution" panel of the Athena X-ray observatory and member of X-IFU Science Advisory Team.

Funds during 2000-2010 include: two PRIN-MIUR (national coordinator A.Natta, OAPA coord. S.Sciortino, 2003-2004 and 2005-2006), one PRIN-INAF (national coord. S.Sciortino, 2003-2004), contracts ASI-INAF “Costa” (2003-2004) and “Micela” (2005-2008), which amounted to ~60 kE/year; plus the PRIN-INAF 2007 (national coord. E.Covino, OAPA coord. F.Damiani, with 10 kE for this UdR), and a MIUR special project on “alta formazione” (Sciortino, 135 kE, 2005-2007). Between 2010-2020 awarded funds included PRIN-INAF “The GAIA-ESO Survey" (S.Randich, OAPA coord. L.Prisinzano, 32.5 kE for OAPA UdR), PRIN-INAF 2012 “CSI NGC2264” (coord. E.Flaccomio 93 kE), plus partial support by LSST-INAF funds (A.Fontana, 4.5 kE/year since 2018 for OAPA), and by Mainstream project “Enhancing the legacy of the Gaia-ESO Survey for open cluster science" (coord. G.Sacco, 25 kE total). Also awarded were grants on “Ricerca di base” OAPA funds and three biannual Marie Curie fellowships on EC funds (2000-2004, 393 kE). In 2014 F.Damiani was awarded 8 kE by the ESF-GREAT Program to organize the "Young clusters in the Gaia-ESO Survey" workshop. New funds for this program are being requested (124 kE) in the associated Large Grant proposal named "Understanding the star formation process and mapping the very young stellar populations in the Milky Way", led by Loredana Prisinzano as PI, plus a small MiniGrant to cover some specific 4MOST-related activities (PI F.Damiani).
