Attività: In Itinere; Data inizio: 2012; Data fine: 2030

The ZOOMING program will perform stringent tests of the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) paradigm by comparing high-quality cluster mass maps, dissected into the dark matter (DM) and baryonic components down to the innermost regions, with hydrodynamical simulations including baryonic and DM physics. It will provide a long-lasting legacy for galaxy evolution studies in different environments, thanks to the unique and homogeneous multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopic observations of massive lensing clusters, part of major Hubble programs. Moreover, the magnification effect of these powerful gravitational lenses is exploited to probe the ionizing power of the population of faint proto-galaxies and globular cluster precursors at z=1-7, zooming into star-forming complexes down to tens of pc scale.

INAF researchers coordinate WGs #0, #2, #3 and #5 (Table 4), as well as PIs of many observational proposals (Table 2). They have a recognized international reputation on cosmological simulations and theoretical aspects of gravitational lensing and dynamics and galaxy evolution. M. Meneghetti led the Science on paper (09/2020) on the discrepancy between observations and ΛCDM predictions (NASA, ESA, HST, INAF PRs, and many interviews e.g., CNN, BBC). A leading role is also in the organization of meetings and Schools (financial support received by INAF). We can just mention the school "Hands-on multi-probe mass measurements in galaxy clusters", 18-21/06/2018 and the meetings "The Universe as a telescope: probing the cosmos at all scales with strong lensing", 3-7/09/2018 (~80 participants) and "Tracing cosmic evolution with clusters of galaxies - In Memory of Riccardo Giacconi", 8-12/07/2019 (~250 participants). In 2016 and 2021 it is also received financial support for an INAF PhD fellow.

To achieve the scientific objectives described session 10. and in Table 1, the ZOOMING program takes advantage of a transformative multi-wavelength dataset, amassed from a number of proprietary and public observational programs. The complete summary of the dataset available to the program and the instruments and the infrastructures involved are reported in Table 2. Observational data are compared with state-of-art simulations detailed in Table 3. High Performing Computing (HPC) is also used to increase the speed and performance of reconstruction methods by performing i) parallelization on GPUs for the mass modeling; ii) Optimization of extended source reconstructions in crowded fields; iii) Realistic simulations produced using the SkyLens image simulation suite to validate current reconstruction methods; iv) Development of tools that combine parametric and free-form approaches to reproduce asymmetric mass distributions, twist of iso-density contours.
