I NEO transizionali (con doppia designazione asteroide/cometa) necessitano di una particolare attenzione tra i corpi primitivi, rappresentando l'anello di coingiunzione tra asteroidi e comete. Alcuni, come il NEO transiente (3200) Phaeton, sono stati identificati come progenitori di sciami meteoritici. Phaethon sarà il target della missione JAXA DESTINY+, che analizzerà la sua polvere allo scopo di identificare la sorgente potenziale dei composti organici terrestri. Otterremo osservazioni da Terra di Phaethon e altri NEO transienti, fornendo il contesto interpretativo di questi corpi estremamente interessanti. Questo programma, cruciale in ambito astrobiologico, porrà INAF in prima linea per la futura selezione di target di missione verso un NEO primitivo.
Transitional NEOs (flagged with both asteroid/comet designation) deserve special attention among primitive bodies, being the missing link in the asteroid-comet continuum. Some of these are identified as meteor stream progenitors. The transient NEO (3200) Phaeton, parent body for the Geminids meteor shower, is the target of the JAXA DESTINY+ mission. It will analyze dust from this NEO in order to identify potential sources of organic compounds on Earth. We will obtain ground-based observations of Phaeton and other Transient NEOs, in order to provide the proper framework to understand the nature of these interesting bodies. This program, crucial for astrobiology, will also put INAF as a frontrunner in the selection of future scientific missions toward primitive NEOs.
