Gli Ultra-Cool Dwarfs (UCD) sono oggetti di tipo spettrale successivo a M7 caratterizzati da massa molto bassa. La classe degli UCD va dalle stelle più deboli alle nane brune, colmando il divario evolutivo tra il regime stellare a quello planetario. Tecniche di fotometria, spettroscopia e astrometria sono necessarie per la loro scoperta e calibrazione; il censimento degli UCD serve a vincolare modelli di formazione e evoluzione. Lo scopo di questi studi è anche quello di trasformare la degenerazione esistente tra massa ed età delle nane brune in uno strumento per rendere loro i “cronometri" della nostra Galassia. Questo gruppo di lavoro è attivo in campo internazionale ed è leader per quanto concerne la quantificazione, l'interpretazione e lo sfruttamento degli UCD.

Ultra-cool dwarfs are objects with very low masses and a spectral type of later than M7. These are objects from the faintest stars to brown dwarfs, bridging the gap from the stellar to the planetary regime. We use photometry, spectroscopy and astrometry for their discovery and calibration; the census of UCDs constrains formation and evolution models. We hope one day to turn the degeneracy between mass and age of brown dwarfs to make them the chronometers of our Galaxy. This group is international and is leading the field in the quantification, interpretation and exploitation of UCDs.
