We are carrying out an investigation of the AGN population in of a sample of z=2-4.5 gas-rich protoclusters exploiting new Chandra observations granted to the proposing team, including the largest program ever awarded to INAF, and follow-up ALMA observations. Comparing the AGN content in protoclusters with the field environment and low-redshift clusters, we will probe if dense and gas-rich environment promote SMBH growth at high-z. We will also search for evidence of the on-set of AGN feedback that is expected to impact strongly the formation of local clusters. Follow-up observations with major observatories, including JWST and VLT/ERIS, are being proposed and will help us to understand the physics of remarkable X-ray selected AGN in those regions.

This project is led by INAF: most of the team members are INAF personnel (C. Vignali is associated), including the PIs of the observations on which the program is based. We have strong connections with broader international collaborations focusing on protoclusters (see Sec. 14).

More generally, INAF has a prominent role in the research field investigating the link between dense environment and AGN activity, especially in light of recent dedicated studies (e.g., Decarli+18, +19, Gilli+19, Mignoli+20, Vito+20, Polletta+21, Tozzi+22 ). Other INAF projects focusing on similar science cases are the "J1030" and "Spiderweb" projects.

Our program will definitely let INAF take the leadership in such field on a global scale. Notably, this project is partially based on the largest Chandra program ever awarded to INAF. In recent years, other two Chandra Large Programs dedicated to (or related with) the study of AGN in protoclusters were granted to INAF (PIs: R. Gilli, P. Tozzi).
