We propose to search for “Pop III SN-like” events in the relatively nearby Universe (z < 1). These objects should be detected as superluminous supernovae, characterized by long-lasting maxima, up to ~ 15 weeks in the "observer rest-frame", produced in the explosions of pair instability SNe occurring in progenitor stars with masses > 70Msun. This program is based on the VST proposal (VST_P111_12, PI Della Valle) for which time has been granted starting from February 2023. This project has a further importance, which goes beyond its immediate scientific objective: it was designed by an international collaboration of observational and theoretical astronomers to prepare future observations of “genuine” Pop III SNe to be carried out with JWST, and soon with LSST.

INAF has a consolidated tradition of leadership in the study of Supernovae, which began in the 60s/70s in various Italian observatories and which is now internationally recognized. This leading role will be ensured, also in the years to come, both by the greater accessibility of the VST for the Italian astronomical community, an ideal tool for carrying out SN surveys, and by the imminent entry into operation of SOXS: the spectrograph at NTT (leaded by INAF) whose use will be strategic to provide the spectroscopic/photometric follow-up of the targets. Finally, we recall the main role played by INAF researchers in the context of the PESSTO (Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey for Transient Objects) collaboration (of which all INAF participants of this proposal are members) and the future commitment of INAF within the LSST project. The combination of these assets will ensure that a significant fraction of SNe that will be discovered in the coming years (not only those discovered within this programme) will be studied by INAF researchers, in many cases, with PI positions.
