Il nostro obiettivo è studiare la composizione chimica dei raggi cosmici utilizzando i telescopi Cherenkov con tecniche di Machine Learning, dimostratesi molto efficaci per la discriminazione gamma/adroni nel contesto dell'astronomia TeV con IACT (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes). Esploreremo sia metodi già sperimentati che nuovi algoritmi, applicandoli alla componente adronica del segnale raccolto dai telescopi, per discriminare efficacemente le diverse specie elementari di adroni. Simuleremo diversi campioni di sciami atmosferici di particelle generate da adroni e li utilizzeremo per testare tecniche di apprendimento automatico, di ensemble e di deep learning. Verificheremo i metodi applicandoli ai dati raccolti da ASTRI Mini-Array e dal telescopio prototipo Astri-Horn.
Our aim is to investigate the ability to infer the chemical compositions of cosmic rays using Cherenkov telescopes. We will exploit Machine Learning techniques, proven to be highly effective for gamma hadron discrimination in the context of TeV astronomy with IACT (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes). We will explore both already assessed methods and new algorithms, applying them to the hadronic component of the signal collected by the Cherenkov telescope, to discriminate the different elemental species of hadrons efficiently. We will simulate different samples of hadron-generated showers and use them to test machine, ensemble, and deep learning techniques. We will verify the methods by applying them to data collected by ASTRI Mini-Array and the prototype telescope Astri-Horn.

<p>Currenly the members of the team are INAF reaserchers mainly at IASF-Palermo. Our aim is to study and develop software tools to make IACTs competitive in cosmic ray science. This would certainly have important repercussions in the field of astroparticle science in which INAF could play a leading role in the coming years with its involvement in the ASTRI Mini-Array experiment and in the CTA observatory. Our goal is also to expand the group to both national and international contributions in an attempt to acquire skills and centrality in science of cosmic rays and in the use of machine learning techniques applied to TeV astrophysics and particle astrophysics.</p>
