Plasma Observatory è una missione di classe M con l’obiettivo di scoprire i processi di energizzazione e trasporto di energia nella magnetosfera terrestre tramite una costellazione formata da un satellite madre e sei smallsat figlie. Plasma Observatory permetterà per la prima volta di studiare l’accoppiamento dei processi che avvengano alle scale ioniche e fluide, nonché la non planarità e la non stazionarietà delle strutture di plasma. Questo porterà a un importante avanzamento nella conoscenza dell'eliofisica e avrà un impatto sul miglioramento della comprensione sia della meteorologia spaziale sia dei plasmi astrofisici più lontani. Plasma Observatory è stata selezionata per lo studio di Fase 0 insieme ad altre 4 missioni nell’ambito della Call M7 di ESA.
The Plasma Observatory is an M7 class mission that will address the science theme ”Unveiling plasma energization and energy transport in the near-Earth plasma environment through multiscale observations” by simultaneous in situ measurements at both fluid and ion scales in seven points with one motherscraft and six smallsat daugthercrafts. The Plasma Observatory will permit for the first time to study scale coupling in plasmas as well as non planarity and non stationarity of plasma structures. This will lead to a major advance in the knowledge of heliophysics and will also have an important impact on improving our understanding of space weather and of more distant astrophysical plasmas. Plasma Observatory is currently in ESA M7 competitive Phase 0 (together with other 4 missions).

<p>Plasma astrophysics; Planetary magnetospheres<br></p>
<p>INAF-IAPS (M.F. Marcucci) is Lead Proposer of Plasma Observatory.</p><p style="text-align: justify; ">The Italian contribution at payload level currently foresees the responsibility of the PPU-M (PI. R. D’Amicis/INAF-IAPS) and of the IMS-M (PI M. F. Marcucci/INAF -IAPS) on board the mothercraft.</p><p style="text-align: justify; ">The IMS will be provided in the framework of a consortium with France, USA and Belgium. IRAP/FR and LAB/FR will provide the entrance optics and the power supplies, UNH/USA will provide the ToF chamber, LPP/FR will provide the anode and TOF ASIC, BIRA/BE will provide the Digital&Processor Unit, INAF-IAPS will coordinate all the development activities, the Integration and Testing and will take care of the calibration of the four units comprised in IMS-M.</p><p style="text-align: justify; ">Italy will be actively contributing to Plasma Observatory being also among the coordinators of the Numerical Working Group (F. Valentini, Università della Calabria) and giving support to the mission design by means of the exploitation of advanced numerical simulations.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">Last but not least, PO Italian members will fully participate in the study of the scientific themes of PO.</p>

PO activities will be supported by ASI in case PO is selected for the Phase A. An estimate of the total funding for Phase A activity will be available in case of selection in November, this year. No external support is currently in place.
