La rapida crescita dei buchi neri supermassicci (SMBH), che alimentano i QSO luminosi all’epoca della reionizzazione (z>6), è un tema dibattuto in astrofisica che ha dato il via a vaste campagne osservative. La HYPERION Science Collaboration (HSC) è ideata per studiare la formazione dei primi QSO luminosi impiegando 1) criteri di selezione fisicamente motivati per QSO a z>6 alimentati da SMBH accresciuti velocemente e 2) un campione di controllo di QSO a z=2-3 di luminosità confrontabile per rivelare una eventuale evoluzione in redshift delle proprietà. HSC è un progetto recente e ambizioso basato su 2 grandi programmi osservativi XMM (~840 ore), arricchito in altre bande da 20 altri programmi di follow-up, a guida INAF, per una visione multi-λ delle proprietà dei QSO/galassie ospiti a z>6.
The rapid growth of Supermassive Black Holes (SMBH) powering luminous QSOs at the Reionization Epoch (z>6) is a hot topic in astrophysics that spurred extensive observational campaigns. Our HYPERION Science Collaboration (HSC) is designed to shed light on the rapid SMBH/host assembly of the first luminous QSOs by employing (i) a physically-motivated selection of z>6 QSOs powered by high SMBH growth rate, and (ii) a control-sample of similar luminosity QSOs at z=2-3 to reveal any possible redshift evolution of their properties. HSC is a recent, ambitious fast-growing project based on a two XMM programs for a total of ~840 hours of observational time, enriched at other bands by ~20 accepted INAF-led follow-up programs for a multi-λ view of z>6 QSO/host properties.

Zappacosta. Both HYPERION and the Titans sample (coordinator L. Zappacosta) and WISSH (coordinator E.Piconcelli) are projects led by INAF researchers. The majority of the co-investigators are working at INAF institutes. The PIs of XMM-HYPE, XMM-LP and of other ~20 additional follow-up programs on Titans and WISSH QSOs are INAF members or associated (Fig. 6). Notice that the XMM-HYPE is one of the largest ever XMM program awarded so far (the fourth in terms of assigned total exposure time). Fundings received to support the HSC research activities. Our program has been funded by the Ricerca Fondamentale INAF 2022 Large Grant (200 keuro, Ref. L. Zappacosta) and partly funded by the PRIN MUR PNRR 2022 program (46 keuro; PRIN 2022 2022TKPB2P, Ref. F. Fiore). Furthermore HSC served as a "Scheda Madre" for a spin-off program on a set of proprietary UV WISSH spectra funded by 1-yr INAF GO grant in 2023 (PI: G. Vietri), involving only two HSC members.
