Jets are a byproduct of accretion processes in many systems at all scales. However, there is as yet no standard model for their underlying physics, and many important open issues remain, including the origin of the observed accretion disc-jet coupling. A wealth of multi-wavelength campaigns has shown that significant emission over a broad range of wavelengths is detected from jets in X-ray binaries. This emission is observed to vary on a broad range of timescales, from years to milliseconds. The broad-band spectral-energy distribution shows a complex evolution, and an even more complex correlation is observed with the variable X-ray emission from the inflow. This program is aimed at studying and interpreting such variable jet emission at many wavelengths and at all timescales.

INAF has a leading role in handling the near-infrared coverage of the observing campaigns. Our team has pioneered the field, publishing the first infrared fast-photometry dataset of an X-ray binary, and has collected a large number of datasets using the ESO infrared imager HAWK-I, currently the only infrared instrument capable of reaching sub-second time resolutions. Our team has also collected a large number of monitoring datasets with the Italian robotic telescope REM, currently one of the most used telescopes to provide IR long-term monitoring coverage of X-ray binaries' outbursts. Our team also owns and operates some of (and the fastest among) the few available optical fast photometers in the World.

21. Fondi a Sostegno Iniziativa

This scientific program received dedicated financial support through a EU FP7 Career-Integration Grant (100k€, PI Piergiorgio Casella) in 2012. A postdoctoral fellow was hired for two years on this grant. The program received dedicated minor financial support through the NuSTAR ASI/INAF program in 2015 (5.6k€, OAR unit coordinator Piergiorgio Casella) and in 2018 (8.5k€, PI Piergiorgio Casella). The program received further minor financial support in the context of scientifically broader funded projects (PRIN INAF, PI Tomaso Belloni; INAF/ASI, PI Tomaso Belloni). More recently the program received further minor financial support through the Mini Grant "JetVar" (20k€, PI Casella). We estimate that full exploitation of the project would require hiring a postdoctoral fellow for the following 6 years (thus about 210k€). Adding travelling, hardware, consumables and publications, we estimate about 300k€ needed in the next 6 years.
