TOCats/web è un servizio di accesso veloce a vari cataloghi di oggetti celesti attraverso l'uso di tecniche di frammentazione gerarchica della sfera celeste, in particolare gli schemi HTM e HEALPix.
Tutti i cataloghi, e i metadati che li descrivono, si trovano all’interno di un database relazionale (MySQL) le cui capacità sono accresciute dalla libreria di indicizzazione dinamica orientata all'astronomia DIF, da noi sviluppata.
Gli utenti possono accedere ai cataloghi attraverso un’interfaccia web o direttamente dai loro applicativi.
L’interfaccia offre anche varie utilità, tra cui link diretti ad altri archivi di dati/immagini creati a partire dalle coordinate. TOCats può anche ospitare cataloghi, immagini, ecc. di altri progetti e renderli accessibili privatamente.
TOCats/web is a tool for fast access to various astronomical object catalogues by using hierarchical scheme techniques to split the celestial sphere, in particular the HTM and HEALPix schemes.
All the catalogues, and the metadata describing them, are hosted in a relational database (MySQL) whose capabilities are leveraged by the custom made, astronomy oriented, dynamic indexing library DIF.
Users can access the catalogues through a web interface or directly from their client applications.
The interface also offers various facilities, like direct links to external archives and data/images as obtained from the sky coordinates one is looking at. TOCats can also host catalogues, images, etc. coming from other projects and make them accessible privately.

We are not aware of any other tool with the capabilities and flexibility offered by TOCats/web. We believe INAF should evaluate it and possibly support and promote its use as well as further implementations. A Grant request has been submitted to the recent INAF internal call.<br>
