A new VLBA survey of radio-faint AGN in the COSMOS field

Questa scheda descrive i prospetti scientifici di una recente survey VLBA (PI: Delvecchio) per osservare >500 galassie star-forming ad alto redshift (0.5<z<4.5) nel campo COSMOS. Per la prima volta, questa survey raggiungerà a 1.4 GHz sia una profondità (3.7uJy/beam) che una risoluzione angolare (0.01 arcsec) elevatissime, necessarie per rivelare i nuclei galattivi attivi (AGN) radio più deboli ed elusivi mai cercati finora, e quantificare il loro contributo all'emissione radio rispetto a processi di formazione stellare. Ciò è cruciale per scomporre accuratamente i due contributi e fare un censimento dell'attività di formazione stellare e di AGN ad alto z, che fornirà importanti vincoli ai modelli di formazione delle galassie. Forte sinergia con gli obiettivi di SKA e suoi precursori.
This “scheda” overviews the science objectives of a recent VLBA survey (PI: Delvecchio) to target >500 typical star-forming galaxies at high redshift (0.5 < z < 4.5) in the COSMOS field. For the first time, this survey will reach at 1.4 GHz both ultra-high sensitivity (3.7 uJy/beam) and angular resolution (0.01 arcsec), which is necessary to unveil the most elusive, radio-faint active galactic nuclei (AGN) ever chased, and quantify their radio contribution relative to star-forming processes. This is key for accurately disentangling the two components and taking a clean census of high-z star formation and radio AGN activity, providing fundamental constraints for galaxy formation models. This program carries a strong synergy with the science goals of SKA and its precursors.

<p>The core team includes 6 INAF Researchers and 4 INAF Associates, who are all working closely with external collaborators from worldwide Institutes.</p><p>INAF leadership is also demonstrated by the PI-ship or involvement of INAF Staff members in state-of-the-art/legacy radio surveys. Specifically:</p><ul><li>The VLBA survey that builds the present "scheda" is led by Delvecchio, who is a member of COSMOS/EMU/MeerKAT/SKA Extragalactic Continuum SWG.</li><li>The corresponding "scheda madre" (SKA_Galev, awarded a Large Grant in 2022) is coordinated by Prandoni. She has also been leading the RQ AGN WG (EMU/ASKAP) and the eMERGE band-C survey in GOODS-N. Also chair of the Italian SKA Board, team member of LOFAR and MeerKAT Legacy surveys.</li><li>Nearly all INAF members and Associates have been PI of radio (VLA/VLBA/EVN/MeerKAT) proposals of star-forming galaxies or AGN. In particular, Spingola is a recognised expert in data reduction/analysis of all VLBI facilities (and VLBI programs led as PI), a strong asset for this program.<br></li></ul><br>

This scheda "VLBA-COSMOS" was linked to a mini-grant request for funding, approved in 2022 (20 k€ to the Coordinator) and thus approaching its end. The corresponding scheda madre "SKA_Galev" is linked to a request for Large Grant (PI: Prandoni), which has also been approved in 2022. As of January 2024, one postdoc has been hired through a PRIN-MUR (99 k€) for 1+1 yr, who is working at INAF-OAB on the science delivered by our VLBA survey (a second postdoc is working at UniBo, thus it does not count in terms of funding acquired by INAF). We stress that the PRIN-MUR budget for INAF-OAB is entirely addressed to the hired postdoc. We prefer not to manually add the above PRIN MUR to "Tabella Fondi" since the exact budget is retrievable from the "CED Servizi - Rendicontazione" portal, and not split in years. As a result, the total amount of (INAF or external) funding assigned until now to this project add up to 119 (=20+99) k€.
