La gran parte delle stelle si forma in ammassi. Alcune question fondamentali relative ai processi fisici responsabili della frammentazione dei clumps molecolari in cores sono tuttora aperte. Quali sono le proprietà dei cores in funzione dello stadio evolutivo dei clumps densi ospitanti ? Fino a che punto la frammentazione è dominata dalla dinamica del gas nei clumps o dal trasporto di massa su filamenti ? ALMAGAL osserva il continuo ad 1mm con ALMA su un campione di più di 1000 clump densi con M>500 M_sun che copre tutti gli stadi evolutivi da IRDC a regioni HII in tutta la Galassia per effettuare uno studio statisticamente significativo della frammentazione dei Clumps fino ad una scala di 1000UA, mappando la temperatura ed i campi di velocità local e globali del gas.
A large fraction of stars form in clusters containing high-mass stars. Yet fundamental questions about the physics responsible for fragmenting molecular Clumps into Cores are still open. What are the physical characteristics of core fragments in dense clumps as a function of evolution? To what extent is fragmentation driven by dynamics in clumps or mass transport in filaments?
ALMAGAL observes 1mm continuum and lines with ALMA toward more than 1000 dense clumps with M>500 M_sun. We cover all evolutionary stages from IRDC to HII regions Galaxy-wide, enabling a complete and statistically significant study of the clump-to-core fragmentation process down to at least 1000 AU and 0.3 M_sun, mapping the temperature and the local/global infall velocity patterns of the cores-hosting clumps.

21. Fondi a Sostegno Iniziativa
The ALMAGAL Project is part of the ECOGAL ERC-Synergy Project. The funding needed for the ALMAGAL activities (PostDocs, PhD Students, Computing, Travels, etc.) comes from ECOGAL and it will be listed only in the ECOGAL Project. 3 non-staff personnel units (Alessio Traficante-TD, Chiara Mininni-AdR and Alessandro Coletta-PhD) are hired from ECOGAL but will work actively for ALMAGAL. However, since these personnel will charge their time on ECOGAL, we are not reporting any FTE for them in ALMAGAL in the detailed 3-years cover in this PTA; their effort however, has been included in the overall FTE of the entire project.
