Il programma GRAWITA è dedicato alla ricerca e allo studio delle controparti elettromagnetiche dei segnali transienti di onde gravitazionali (GW). GRAWITA effettua follow-up nelle bande radio, ottica, NIR and X-ray degli eventi di GW distribuiti da LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA. GRAWITA ha accesso ai telescopi, l’esperienza e la capacità per ottenere fondamentali scoperte nell’astronomia MultiMessenger, come dimostrato con GW170817 osservando, per la prima volta, l’evoluzione spettrale della KN generata dalla coalescenza NS-NS e riconoscendo la prova della nucleosintesi di elementi pesanti. GRAWITA è fondatore della collab. EU ENGRAVE per lo studio di controparti di GW e promuove lo sviluppo di nuovi detectors di GW, quali ET e LGWA.L'attività di GRAWITA è focalizzata sul run GW (O4) da aprile 2024

GRAWITA is devoted to the search and study of electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave (GW) events. Our aim is to carry out the follow-up in the radio, optical, NIR, X-ray bands of the GW triggers released by LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA. GRAWITA has telescope access, the experience and know-how to achieve breakthrough discoveries in MultiMessenger Astronomy, as proven with GW170817. We observed, for the first time, the spectral evolution of the KN after the NS-NS merging and we found the proof of the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. GRAWITA founded the EU collaboration ENGRAVE for the study of GW counterparts and promotes the participation of the INAF in the development of new GW detectors (ET, LGWA). The activity is focussed on the run GW (O4) restarting at April 2024

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: var(--bs-font-sans-serif); font-size: 1rem;">GRAWITA played a key role in observing, studying and understanding the first EM counterpart of a gravitational wave event, GW170817. This achievement was internationally recognized and GRAWITA is one of the founding teams of the European collaboration ENGRAVE (Electro-magNetic counterparts of GRAvitational waves at the Very Large Telescope, http://www.engrave-eso.org ). ENGRAVE represents major groups across ESO member states that have formed over the last few years to use the VLT@ESO (and other international facilities) for follow-up studies of the EM counterparts of gravitational waves. GRAWITA/INAF researchers are members of the Governing Council and the Executive committee and lead working groups of ENGRAVE. Finally, several GRAWITA researchers are involved in the recently born (2022) Einstein Telescope Collaboration providing relevant contributions in the Observational Science Board (OSB), see also the related Scheda INAF "Einstein Telescope".</span></div>

21. Fondi a Sostegno Iniziativa

In 2015, GRAWITA was founded by INAF with an unsolicited project (105 Keuro). Thanks to the excellent results obtained on GW170817, the CdA of INAF awarded a special Prize to GRAWITA (200 Keuro). GRAWITA researchers obtained further financial contribution from PRIN MIUR 2017 (512 Keuro). Part of PRIN SKA-CTA supported GRAWITA research(59,7). A project devoted to the gravitational wave astrophysics foreseen by the Einstein Telescope has been submitted for PRIN MIUR 2020, and it is a matter of a specific "scheda INAF". The evaluation of the funds is done for the entire period 2014-2030. It is evaluated keeping in mind what experienced up to now for both gained funds and expenses. Nevertheless, the expenditure forecast is guided by the objective of maintaining and improving the level of excellence achieved by GRAWITA in period 2014-2022. GRAWITA has 69 INAF member plus about forty associates from Italian universities (including Ph.D. and post-doc), we evaluated that running cost (networking) and Human Resources i.e. regular turnover (and formation) of young researchers is requiring a budget of the order of 150 keuro/year. GRAWITA has just obtained a INAF Large Grant (P.I. P. D'Avanzo) to secure the financial support required to properly tackle the outstanding e.m. scientific/observational challenge by run "O4" by LIGO/Virgo/Kagra which will start at May 2023.
