Il nostro gruppo ha contribuito in modo determinante alla scoperta di alcuni sistemi stellari molto densi e compatti ad alto redshift,
che presentano masse e dimensioni del tutto paragonabili a quelle tipiche degli ammassi globulari.
I nostri risultati hanno motivato diversi tentativi di spiegare la presenza di tali sistemi in modelli cosmologici.
Tuttavia, nella maggior parte degli studi condotti fino ad ora, gli ammassi stellari non sono modellati ab-initio,
quindi essi non spiegano i processi fisici che causano la loro formazione in aloni di materia oscura.
In questo progetto 1) eseguiremo simulazioni con risoluzione sub-pc di
ammassi stellari in contesto cosmologico e 2) confronteremo le loro proprietà con le osservazioni di sistemi locali ed in campi lensati.
Our group is a major contributor to the detection of a few very dense, compact, star-forming systems at high redshift, with mass ~10^6 Msun and sizes of the order of ~10 pc.
Such features imply average stellar densities comparable to those of globular clusters.
Our results motivated several attempts to account for the presence of such systems in cosmological models.
However, in most studies carried on so far, clusters are 'sub-grid' ingredients,
hence they are unable to provide clues on the physical processes regulating their formation within dark
matter halos. In this project we will 1) run sub-pc resolution simulations in a cosmological
context to resolve the formation of star clusters and 2) compare their properties with observations in the local
Universe and in lensed fields.

Star Formation; Globular clusters; Extragalactic astronomy; Gravitational lensing
Our team includes members active in several fields: stellar evolution, dynamical and kinematical properties of stellar populations, hydrodynamical simulations of star clusters and cosmological simulations of early galaxies, galaxy cluster physics, gravitational lensing, and observational properties of high-z systems, star formation, molecular clouds and astrochemistry. Our group includes INAF researchers who gave a major contributor to the detection and characterisation of a few very dense, compact, star-forming systems at high redshift, with masses of 10^6 -10^7 Msun and half-light radii of a few tens of pc. Such features imply average stellar density values comparable to those of some old GCs in the Milky Way and M31 galaxies. Our INAF team also includes major experts in the properties of local, old GCs. The heterogeneity of our team places us in a unique leadership position in a field in which cosmology and stellar astrophysics, or the sciences of high-redshift galaxies and of old GCs are auxiliary to each other.

At present, the funds at our disposal include a PRIN-MUR 2022 grant (200 keuro in total divided in two research units, project title: Globular clusters in cosmological simulations and in lensed fields: from their birth to the present epoch; PI: F. Calura). Most of the INAF-OAS share (127,6 keuro in total) has been used to hire one Riicercatore a Tempo Determinato. In 2023, we also obtained a 20 keuro mini-grant (title: Clumps at cosmological distance: revealing their formation, nature, and evolution; PI: F. Calura). Additional funds are from the Centro Nazionale HPC, Spoke 3 - Astrophysics and Cosmos Observations, from which we can rely on a ~117 keuro budget to work on a related project (code optimization for performing hydro-simulations and GPU porting; PI: F. Calura). The latter funds are used for a 'Ricercatore a Tempo Determinato' (R. Pascale) contract and other related expenses, that can be performed by the PI and the hired TD only, for expenses strictly related to simulations (travels for disseminating the results at conferences and workshops). Raffaele Pascale also acknowledges support from an INAF mini grant of 10.660 keuro obtained in 2022. Before 2022, we also obtained a PRIN INAF 2029 grant (~65 keuro, PI: F. Calura).
