GAEA (GAlaxy Evolution and Assembly) is a state-of-the-art theoretical model that follows the star formation, metallicity and black hole accretion history of galaxies in cosmological volumes. The model, developed over the past years by an international group of researchers with a core team based in Trieste, is well renowned by the astronomical community at large and is being used in a number of different projects with different goals. In fact, the good agreement between predictions from our model and a wealth of observational measurements at different cosmic epochs, makes GAEA a useful and timely tool to (i) interpret data in a cosmological framework; (ii) test/validate data analysis procedures; (iii) guide the conception and design of future observational programmes and strategies.

While GAEA does not represent the only theoretical model available to the INAF community, it is characterized by a unique level of sophistication, and includes detailed and tested prescriptions to account for physical processes that are typically neglected in similar models (e.g. non instantaneous recycling approximation, variable stellar initial mass function, H2-to-HI transition). GAEA is internationally renowned and among the most successful models published in the past years.

The widespread use of GAEA within several collaborations, despite being built around a relatively small number of people, is evidence of a very strong interest also by INAF researchers. Indeed, to our knowledge, GAEA predictions are/will be employed in about 20 independent programmes/projects, some of which are based on very large international collaborations (EuclM2, SKA, MOONS-VLT-0). A list of the programmes that mention GAEA or explicitly include team members is given in box 13 (Linee di ricerca).

21. Fondi a Sostegno Iniziativa

The major past funding sources for this programme have been: European Research Council (StGDeLucia - funded TD and then TI position for De Lucia for five years, one PhD fellowships and two 4-year postdoctoral position - 750k€); the MERAC foundation (funded one postdoctoral position - 146k€); INAF (funded two PhD fellowships one of which was interrupted by the student for personal reasons - about 80k€). In the estimate given below, we have considered only 2/3 of the ERC grant to account for the fact that it was not entirely dedicated to GAEA developments/projects. The project has received funds from INAF in the form of a Theory Grant (grant assigned in 2022). The budget allocated (50k€) has been included in the numbers given in this section. As anticipated in the theory grant proposal, the entire budget was allocated to hire one postdoctoral fellow that has now been included as a team member, and who started on September 2023. In 2023, we were granted funding (one 2-year postdoctoral position) for a project focused on the exploitation of SKA and its precursors. The postdoc selection has been completed and the hired AdR should start in September. We have not included this funding to the numbers below as the project is only partially based on GAEA.
