This research explores the potential of machine learning and neural networks in recognizing the input features of aberrated wavefronts transmitted through multimode optical fibers in view of applications for wavefront sensing in ground based telescopes. Our study begins with the simualtion of multimode fiber propagation: a Gaussian beam is distorted with known aberrations and then sent through the fiber to analyze the output effects. This groundwork validates a convolutional neural network architecture, providing a provisional reconstruction accuracy. The subsequent phase is experimental, and it aims to validate and potentially adjust neural network training based on the new outcomes.

The greatest part of the budget will be devoted to travel, congresses and publications. This amount will also cover the mission expenses for foreign visitors who will come to the OAAb to support the activities. A consistent slice of finances regards the optical test-benches tools: in particular, we expect customized waveguides and fibers to take a large fraction of this. A smaller part will be reserved for a dedicated workstation for the laboratory acquisitions and the setup of the NN.
