Il Large Binocular Telescope e' un telescopio ottico-IR della classe di 10m. Disegnato intorno a due specchi primari di 8.4m, montati su una montatura comune, e a due secondari adattivi in gradi raggiungere il limite di diffrazione, e' posto in cima al Mt. Graham in Arizona. E' equipaggiato con una serie di strumentazione tradizionale (LBC, LUCI, PEPSI, MODS) ed adattiva (LBTI, LUCI-AO). Nuovi strumento AO (SHARK-NIR, SHARK-VIS e iLocater) sono in costruzione. Il telescopio eè gestito da un consorzio di cui l’INAF detiene il 25%. In questa scheda viene descritto lo stato della infrastruttura, il suo previsto sviluppo e l’uso che ne deriva per la comunità’ italiana.
The Large Binocular Telescope is a 10m class optical-IR telescope. Designed around two 8.4m primary mirrors, mounted on a common mount, and two adaptive secondary mirrors capable of reaching the diffraction limit, it is located atop Mt. Graham in Arizona. It is equipped with a variety of traditional (LBC, LUCI, PEPSI, MODS) and adaptive (LBTI, LUCI-AO) instrumentation. New AO instruments (SHARK-NIR, SHARK-VIS and iLocater) are under construction. The telescope is managed by a consortium of which INAF holds 25%. We describe here the status of the infrastructure, its planned development and its use by the Italian community.
